What’s in a name you ask? My dear, there is identity in a name. In the movie Anne of Green Gables when Ann is defending her name spelled with an e she makes the statement, “I read in a book once that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but I’ve never been able to believe it. I don’t believe a rose would be as nice if it was called a thistle or a skunk cabbage.” Somehow I agree with Anne Shirley. Take my name, for instance, Connie. The meaning of Connie is Faithful. That’s a good name! Proud meaning. And it’s true! In my case anyway, for the most part. Sometimes I wish it wasn’t but it is who I am and who God made me to be, faithful.
Several years ago I heard a short teaching on your name and identity. It was simple and good. And as I listened I remembered the several times that God had audibly called my name, Connie. “Faithful”
You see our enemy, the devil, satan doesn’t want us to understand our name. He has tried to give us a new identity. One that identifies with him. You know the ones I’m talking about, loser, deadbeat, worthless, stupid, whore, poor, cheater, addict. He knows there is an identity crisis with God’s people and he wants to take our hope and vision away. Look at some of his names: Lucifer- Bright & morning star, the fallen one, the light of deception. satan- Accuser or adversary. Devil – False accuser, Serpent- Sharpness of vision, sly and cunning, lay in wait until they can kill.
What’s in a name? life and death, hope, destiny. Our enemy doesn’t want us to understand our name. He doesn’t want us to identify with the name God calls us.
What is your name? I mean the name God calls you? Daughter? Son? Heir? Friend? Beloved? Can you identify with your name? Stop listening to the enemy and begin to respond to what God is calling you. See yourself for who you are in Christ Jesus. Your no longer a slave but a joint heir with Christ. We need to hear the name God calls us. Your name can define your path in life.
Let’s look at a couple of examples from the Bible. Abraham: Father of a multitude; Jacob: The supplanter; David: Beloved; Elijah: My God is Jehovah; Hannah: Grace or prayer; Sarah: Princess;
Hear the name God is calling you! Open not only your ears but your heart so that you can listen AND hear God calling.
